Swedish publishing group passes halfway mark in Anygraaf CMS rollout - Consolidated system to serve 14 newspapers

Swedish media group, Norrköpings Tidningars Media AB, has reached the halfway point in the rollout of Neo by Anygraaf Content Management System across its several publications.

Since the project start in the fall of 2011, more than half of the publications in the project have completed the transition from Anygraaf’s Doris system to its new Neo CMS and are in full production with users and the company seeing immediate benefits in efficiency, costs and system support.

“We have much less support requests from newspapers already using Neo,” said Anders Bergström, NTM’s systems manager. “The ACDC (automatic page layout) concept has helped also financially and resources have been better utilized. The difference is that we have now only one system to support, which makes everything easier.”

The publications already transitioned to NEO include: Folkbladet published in Norrköping (25 users), Östgöta Correspondenten in Linköping (75), Extra Östergötland and 18 minuter in Norrköping and Upsala (12), Gotlands Tidningar in Visby (20), Gotlands Allehanda in Visbyyssä (20), Västerviks-Tidningen in Västervik ( 25) and Motala & Vadstena Tidning in Motala (25).

The remaining publications will transition to Neo throughout 2013 and include: Norrköpings Tidningar in Norrköping (70 users / planned introduction in March 2013), Piteå-Tidningen in Piteå (35/April), Norrbotten-Kuriren in Luleå, (50/May), Norrländska Socialdemokraten in Luleå (50/May) and Upsala Nya Tidning in Uppsala (75/Oct). NTM does not own Piteå-Tidningen, but manages its production systems.

The need for a new CMS had been prompted by demands for greater efficiency in managing multi-channel publishing with the goal that the content management system be the main tool for all content channel activities - from planning to writing articles, designing pages and handling images and publishing to various channels. A vendor with a long-term development plan was also important.

“Our demands for a new content delivery system were that it is supported for at least five years and that the investment is for us productive. During this period, we will continue the print products as they are published, but we are investing more and more in digital publications. Editorial resources are going to be invested increasingly to serve digital operations. That is the reason to find ways to produce print publications with fewer resources,” said Bergström.

In implementing Neo, NTM chose a system that meets users’ editorial needs requiring the system to be easy to use, yet robust enough that employees can do a good job and be able to control the entire multi-channel workflow. Transparency, stability, speed, robust archive functions and easy access both inside and outside of the corporate network were also key requirements.

“The entire editorial team will (have a role) on what happens in the whole company, whether it is an assignment made for TV or for (one of) the newspapers,” Bergström added. “NTM's focus on digital media will become more aggressive. The system must support multi-channel publishing. We will profile channels better for both newspaper and digital media. This means that reporters will write different versions for different publication channels in the same assignment package. In this way, we can increase the journalistic quality of each channel. And if new publishing channels (need to be created), they must be easy to put into the system.”

All of the papers will be served from one centralized installation in Norrköping with both live production and separate testing and training environments maintained. NTM will also be able to manage custom workflows, channels and system features to give each publication a production environment unique to its needs.

“Changing content management system is a great thing for both IT staff and users. It is important to have a stable and reliable supplier with extensive experience of working with editorial systems,” says Bergstrom.

Norrköping Todningar is Sweden's oldest newspaper still in publication. It was founded in 1758 and is one of the ten oldest newspapers in the world. Norrköping Tidningar Media AB, NTM, which includes Norrköping Newspapers as well as other publications posted sales in 2010 of approximately 1.8 billion krona and has approximately 1,500 employees. The NTM Group includes a wide range of media outlets including local newspapers, free newspapers, websites, mobile channels and radio stations. The NTM Group was also the first media company in Sweden to start up a local TV channel tied to a morning paper. NTM also maintains a printing and distribution company, travel agency and digital media development company.
